Fiesta 2013!

Fiesta 2013

Recently, the Dado Group offices celebrated the 122nd-annual Fiesta festival, one of the country’s largest and most historic celebrations. Fiesta began in 1891 as a one-parade event celebrating the heroes of the Alamo and Battle of San Jacinto; today, it is a 10-day celebration with over 100 events and attended by over 3.5 million people annually.  The anchor event, the Battle of Flowers, is the largest parade in Texas and ranks second nationally to the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, CA.

Our office celebrated at 1221 Broadway along with our gracious hosts, Urban Land Institute – San Antonio.  This event is a monumental point of pride for the city and we were thrilled to be able to celebrate alongside our fellow San Antonians.

Dado Group presents at PechaKucha 20×20

548068_10150788408221499_2109887035_nOn February 19th, we (partners Kristin & Clay Hefty) presented at the Center for Architecture as part of the international lecture series, PechaKucha.  The PechaKucha 20×20 series follows a simple presentation format: show 20 images, each visible for 20 seconds, with description/narrative as necessary.  This wildly popular presentation series has prompted events in over 500 cities worldwide, garnering praise for it’s broad content and casual delivery.

This particular event, themed “Couples Night”, featured “eight of San Antonio’s most creative couples” discussing topics ranging from artistic collaboration to cinema reviews to entrepreneurship.  We recounted our “San Antonio love story”, chock-full of amusing stories and lessons learned over our firm’s history.  The video to the presentation can be found here: Dado Group – Pecha Kucha vol. 9

Dado Group Featured in San Antonio Business Journal

As we bring in the new year, we are excited to have been featured by Donna Tuttle of the San Antonio Business Journal for our recent merger.  The feature chronicles the history of our friendship and working relationship, the origins of the Dado Group name, and a few of our signature commercial and residential projects.

Here’s an excerpt from the feature:

“The tiny firm is setting the foundation for a bigger future.  Last month, Wiese Hefty Design Build merged with Tobin Smith Architect, LLC to create a new eight-person architectural firm called Dado Group.  Its 2,200-square-foot office is located at 120 Mistletoe in the Monte Vista neighborhood, where architect Tobin Smith has worked for two years.

The Dado Group now boasts a portfolio of unique and iconic projects – residential, retail, and commercial – that involve some of San Antonio’s most influential business leaders and creative professionals.  Projects range from $250,000 to $5 million.

For 2013, Dado Group is working on: renovations for the Westin La Cantera Resort, a transformation of the former Blonde Lighting Fixture Supply Co. building at 620 E. Dewey Place into new office and lab space for Biomedical Development Corp.; and a land development in Austin.  Pearl’s (Bill) Shown has suggested the firm is in the running for future gigs.  There are projects for even bigger-name clients, whose names the firm cant reveal…”
